Over The Hills And Far Away (Led Zeppelin)
Over The Hills And Far Away (Led Zeppelin)
Irish sounding with many metric changes provides a unique flair - a solid work with a big dynamic range and bigger cello solo.
The original piece was based upon an Irish folk melody - close enough to Scotland to feel its influence as well. As such, I saw an opportunity to bring out the ‘bagpipe’ feel with the copious use of open strings (double-stopped 5ths) and parallel motion between instruments. The frequent metric changes also help to give an improvisatorial feel as might be heard on a Scottish hillside from a bagpipe. Although precision is important here, try to keep a light, sing-song feel except where the loud sections come in (theme two) - where super fortés and a fast bow will win the day.
