Scarborough Fair/Canticle (Anon.)
Scarborough Fair/Canticle (Anon.)
My first arrangement and still one of my best. Using styles from Schütz, Vivaldi and Beethoven, this work is very passionate and all encompassing.
I decided to try a chronological ‘march of styles’ starting with early music (Palestrina, Schütz, etc.) then moving into Vivaldi (from Concerto Grosso in D minor, Opus 3, No. 11), then Beethoven (rhythm and feeling from 1st movement of the String Quartet in F major, Opus 18, No. 1), and finally to the Scarborough Fair melody which is an anonymous 16th century melody made famous by Simon and Garfunkel in the movie ‘The Graduate’. After a center section which is wholly original and constructed as a Vivaldi-style slow movement, I travel backwards ending once again in the early music style. Hold back tempi, as rushing is a tendency especially in the upper two voices.
