Dust In The Wind (Kansas)
Dust In The Wind (Kansas)
One of the prettiest rock melodies ever. A 1st violin showcase with the guitar captured between viola and cello.
The big challenge here was how to mimic the beautiful guitar ostinato of the original with a minimum of the quartet’s resources. The cellist can’t negotiate the pizzicatos the way a guitarist can, so I divided the line between viola and cello in such a way as to keep interest and playability. I added a small middle section which allows the ostinato to reenter with more drama. Don’t rush - A very steady tempo is all that is called for. Viola and cello should try to sound like a single guitar while in contrast, violins should remain as fluid and lyrical as possible trading off lines.
