When I'm Sixty-Four (The Beatles)

When I'm Sixty-Four (The Beatles)

String Quartet Only

With an Alberti bass from Bach's Aire and Gigue, this very light fare has an original, darker middle section and ends in a smile.

This was my second arrangement for the quartet and coming on the heels of Scarborough, I thought I'd try my hand in the amusing category. Mixing an Alberti bass (from Bach's Air and Gigue, Suite No. 3 in D major) with The Beatles melody works nicely and sets up a driving rhythm which I transform in the B section by way of a minor key. Our violist likes to blow a kazoo-type whistle after the last note which he hid in his mouth for the entire piece. This is a good example of how two styles can be superimposed vertically. Hold the rhythm back and try for a wide contrast between short playing for the first section and dark and legato for the minor section.
